Dreadlock Education Center

Although we are, indeed, a brick and mortar business that loves to get our hands on your locks in person, we understand that not everyone can afford to come see us or lives close enough to make the commute! (Want to see if there are any professional dreadlocks artists closer to you than us? Check out our (International) Dreadlock Artist Directory!) Our first priority will always be education and making sure that folks have a resource for good, reputable, unbiased information about dreadlocks; how to prepare for them, how to install them, how to maintain them, etc.

This home page is intended to be a quick guide on how to use this section of our website. Although it’s hard for us to narrow it down (because we think ALL the information on our website is very important and good to know before making the leap into your dreadlock journey), we’ve put together a little road map, if you will, to help you navigate these pages.

PLANNING AHEAD

The decision to lock up your hair carries a lot of commitment, and it also places upon you the obligation of properly researching all the necessary things before you jump in. Getting dreadlocks impulsively rarely works out well and we want to make sure you have all your proverbial ducks in a row before you start getting knotty!

I. Preparing for Dreadlocks – This section will help you with some of the aspects of dreading that you may not have thought about yet such as:

a. What’s Your Motivation?,
b. Telling your Friends, Family, & Employer, and
c. Research! (This outlines a little about how to use this site as well!)

The next step in planning ahead involves getting a good idea for what you want your dreadlocks to end up looking like to make sure you end up with the size and aesthetic you are hoping to achieve. You can start doing that in the next section of the education center:

II. Sectioning & Sizing – In this section it goes over several different sectioning patterns as well as the size sections you’ll need to shoot for to get the size and quantity of dreadlocks you’re hoping for.

GETTING STARTED

After you’ve done all your early planning work, you’ll want to start researching what your options are for what methods you may want to use to install or start your new dreadlocks. You can do that in this section:

III. Dreadlock Installation – There is an article on each of the different installation methods including helpful YouTube videos, links, and a handy pros and cons list for each method to help you weigh the choices accordingly. Note that any method that we have found to be particularly damaging or bad for the hair/dreadlocks we’ve notated with an asterisk. The articles on these methods are intended merely to inform, but we definitely do NOT recommend them!

Although it’s not a part of the education center, you may also want to to check out the How to Prepare for Your Visit page. Although it’s designed to help advise our clients on how to prepare for their appointments, it’s full of good advice on how you can start to prepare for locking up your own hair, too!

CARING FOR YOUR DREADLOCKS

The first page you’ll definitely want to take a look at is the page about Washing! It’s a part of the next section we’re going to recommend:

IV. Dreadlock Maintenance – This section discusses all the different ways you may want to maintain your locks. Keep in mind that no matter how much or how little work you’re planning on putting into your locks, you always, at the very least, need to wash and separate your locks! (Separating is a much-ignored and crucially important maintenance that many other websites graze over so definitely give it a read!) Again, any techniques that we’ve found to be damaging or otherwise not recommended we’ve notated with asterisks.

And by now you’re probably asking yourself well what about products?

V. Dreadlock Products – This section discusses the different types of products out there (shampoos, sprays, powders, etc.). Once again, products we do not recommend are notated with an asterisk. We highly encourage you to read thoroughly through the page about Shampoos/Soaps and Wax*.

and finally,

VI. Frequently Asked Questions – This section is our most frequently updated and added-to section. We are constantly adding new articles to answer questions that people like YOU are asking about dreadlocks! If you can’t find the answer to what you want to know anywhere else, there’s a good chance you’ll find it there!

Of course, there’s a lot of other information here, too, so please have a look around! We couldn’t include every link here in this guide; these are just the high points most folks are usually looking for!

Remember there’s a search bar at the top right of every page if you’re still having problems finding what you want and if after all this you STILL can’t find what you’re looking for feel free to contact us! We’re always happy to personally answer questions, especially if it’s information not already on our website someplace.

We hope you find our website helpful and we look forward to hearing from you!

(P.S. Looking to come see us in person for some lock lovin’? Check out the “Make An Appointment” button above!)
